Gunmen kill nearly 60 people in Sokoto state

Reports from Sokoto state suggests that at least 60 people were killed in Wednesday’s raid on a village in Sabon-Birnin-Gobir Local Government Area.

Ganau said the attackers spent hours exploding parts of the villages without anyone approaching them.

Also, a woman and three gunmen were killed in an attack on Gwadabawa Local Government Area.

An official at the scene said that between 3, 4 and 5pm on Wednesday, they heard about 100 people had picked up motorcycles from a nearby forest. and Issa headed for the villages.

“When we got the news, we went and reported to the security forces, so they came to Garki, and they started here in Dan.”

“In my hometown of Dan’a, we saw 13 dead bodies, with the exception of those being searched. In Garki,  I was shocked about what I saw at the scene and I took pictures of 19 bodies,” the official said.

“In Kuzari town, 20 people were killed, including the pastor of the town, six were killed in the town of Kafi and two were shot dead in Masawa town,” he said.

Ganau said that the total number of dead bodies he saw was around 60, with the exception of those being searched.

He added: “The cattle were killed by cattle rustlers. It was not long before the governor of the state staged a rally in New Birni last week to pray for the people of the town for the murder of 19 people.” .

“We have informed the New Birni police of what has happened and they have gone to Garki, but what is happening is that they have no equipment to fight these militants.”

“Apart from the lack of adequate equipment, the security forces themselves have not had enough to approach these militants,” he said.

Sokoto is a neighboring state of Zamfara, which has been hit by burglaries and cattle rustling.

Last week, the International Crisis Group, said more than 8,000 people had been killed in the north-west in 10 years.
