The federal government instructed the police to clarify the circumstances of the mass rape and murder of a student at Benin University, Vera Uwaila Omozuwa, in Benin, and the serial sexual exploitation of minors in Jigawa by 14 men, with the participation of the perpetrators.
In a statement issued today in Abuja on Tuesday, June 2, Minister of Information and Culture Lai Mohammed said that by bringing the perpetrators of abominable crimes to justice, the federal government would strongly notice total gender aversion to violence in any form.
The minister described the mass rape and murder of Miss Omozuwa in the state of Edo as a cruel and barbaric act that offends human sensitivity, and is also contrary to decency, saying that no society will tolerate such depravity.
He also said that the serial sexual abuse of minors by 14 men in the state of Jigawa is not only repulsive but highly condemning.
Alhaji Mohammed pointed out: “It is said that the true yardstick of society is how to treat the most vulnerable members,” the federal government will do all it can to stop the growing trend of gender-based violence in the country.
