Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani has announced that his government will soon release the remaining Taliban prisoners to support a US-led peacekeeping effort in the country.

Ghani told a joint meeting of the South Asian Development Community in Wasington with the US Peace Corps that his government had already released 3,000 prisoners.

“My colleagues and I have decided to release another 2,000 prisoners in a short period of time. We will announce this time soon, ”the Afghan president said.

Ghani said that in the meantime, a Taliban team in Kabul is investigating the group’s prisoners released in exchange for the exchange of 1,000 Afghan security personnel held by the Taliban.
