One of the police officers at the scene of George Floyd murder incident is of Nigerian decent, as it was confirmed that his father is from Nigeria.
The police officer who goes by the name Alex Kueng joined the police initially because he felt that diversity could bring about changes in the police department which has long been accused of racism.
It was said that George Floyd, whose name gas been painted in murals, has been buried.
Mr. Kueng who is charged with aiding and abetting in the murder of George Floyd, has been released on bail, he has been faced heavy criticism from strangers and he has been denounced by some of his family members.
Meanwhile, before Mr. Kueng was arrested, he had fought the issue of police abuse of black people, which led to him joining the police in part to help protect people close to him from police aggression. He said that diversity would bring change in the perceived notion of police brutality.
He had seen one his younger ones arrested and treated badly, in his opinion, by sheriff deputies. He had seen himself defending his decision to join the police force, noting that it was the best way to solve the problems of a collapsed system. He had encountered friends over whether public protest could solve the problem.
His mother, Joni Kueng recalled he pointed out that things needs to changed from within the police force after he watched protesters blocking the highway some few years back. She said that’s one of the reason why he joined the force and a black police officer at that in order to bridge the gap in the community.
As hundreds of people protested the killing of George Floyd on May 25, Mr. Kueng became part of the national debate over police brutality over the black community, an incident he promise to resolve when joining the police.
The officer who placed his knee on the Floyd’s neck, Derek Chauvin, has been previously accused of similar incidents in the past. He is charged with second degree murder and second degree manslaughter, Mr. Kueng and two other former police officers face charges for aiding and abetting the killing of George Floyd. Mr. Kueng, who is 26 years old, was the least experienced and youngest officer at the scene of the incident, on his third shift as a full officer.
The apprehension of Mr. Kueng, whose mother is a white woman and father from Nigeria, has brought pain and sadness to his family and friends. His mother said the involvement of his son in the incident was a punch in the gut. She said she felt she has raised a child, whom you know on very well.
She said their family is racially diverse to be involved in such a racially motivated incident as she can’t understand why this is happening.
Mr. Kueng siblings, Taylor and Radiance, both of whom are African-American, called for the arrest and prosecution of the four officers involved in the murder including their brother. They were part of the demonstrations in Minneapolis.
