NBC directs DSTV to suspend its planned increase in subscription fee

Mr. Armstrong Idachaba, Acting Director General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation, NBC, on Tuesday directed the management of MultiChoice, to suspend its planned increment in subscription fee on its different bouquet in DSTV.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Muhammed, also mentioned that that the Federal Government’s plan to remove DSTV’s monopoly on sporting rights.

They both spoke to the National Assembly, while updating members of the ad-hoc committee looking into the planned increment by DSTV.

Idachaba said that he concur with the committee’s decision to call on DSTV to suspend its increment on subscription fee.

Earlier on, Mr. Muhammed told lawmakers that he has signed an agreement to remove the monopoly of MultiChoice in the country, stressing that the amendment to the broadcasting act, will implement the removal in the monopoly of MultiChoice.

Based on the amendment to section 628 of the Broadcasting Act, is in the interest of Nigerians.

The Chairman of the ad-hoc committee as well as other lawmakers who questioned the Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Muhammed on the new bouquet payment sample issued by MultiChoice for the payment of DSTV subscription, complained of the high cost of subscription fee.

He stated that the house saw the hike in subscription fee on the satellite television pay as you go system as an system that must be suspended immediately.
