Man charged to court for stealing magistrate phone

On Friday, the Ebonyi State Police Command brought before the Ebonyi State Magistrate court a 20 year old man, named Obiemezie Chikezie, who was charged for stealing the mobile phone of a female magistrate.

The magistrate, Mrs Ezuego Esther, was said to be jogging along Nna Street in the Udensi Area of Abakaliki at about 5:30am when the suspect snatched the phone away from her and took off.

It was understood that efforts made to track the suspect became unsuccessful on the day it happened, not until on Wednesday when he was caught by the police. Chiekezie was then taken to the court on one court charge for stealing, on Friday.

Mr Sabastine Alunona, the Police prosecutor explained to the court that the offence being committed was punishable under Section 402 (A) of the criminal Code cap. 33, vol, 1, Laws of Ebonyi State of Nigeria, 2009.

There was no application of bail made on the suspect behalf as he didn’t have any defense counsel to represent him in court.

Although in her ruling, Mrs Nnena Onuaha, the Chief Magistrate, granted him bail of 1 million, with one surety.

According to her, she mentioned that the surety must be a resident within the jurisdiction of the court and must possess landed property which must be vetted by the court. The case was adjourned for hearing for July 27, 2020.
