Life Imprisonment for Kidnapping – Sanate Prescribes

On Tuesday the Sanate increased the punishment for Kidnapping from 10years imprisonment to life imprisonment.

The upper chamber also removed the gender restricted of Defilement and rape.

These Senate resolutions followed the third reading and approval of “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Penal Code Act CAP. C.38, Laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 2004.”

The bill sponsored by Senator Oluremi Tinubu (Lagos Central) seeks to remove the statute of limitation on corruption, increase the punishment for the crime of kidnapping and remove gender restrictions on the crime of rape and other related issues.

The bill also removed the current time frame for reporting and prosecuting corruption cases in the country.

It also removed gender restrictions on the crime of rape by explaining that both men and women could be raped.

If the bill becomes law, corruption cases can be actionable at any time.
