We must all fight against rape – Femi Gbajabiamila



Speaker of the House of Representative has said that both the leaders and the citizens in the country must rise against rape.

The Speaker received a delegation of the Movement Against Rape/Sexual Violence led by the wife of Kaduna State governor, Hajiya Aisha Ummi el-Rufai, the Speaker said the statistics on rape cases in Nigeria “is mind blowing.

The Speaker described the rampant incidence of rape in the country as a pandemic, he said every stratum of the society, including the media, has a role to play in the fight against the pandemic.

He expressed that the statistics are very alarming on the issue of rape. Also, he said rape and gender-based violence is mind-boggling. He said It’s only a deprived mind that can engage in rape.

He stated that the issue of rape should be treated the way Corona is treated. He said issue need to be tackled head on.

He mentioned that no sane man would have sexual intercourse with a 3-month old baby.
He noted that Muslims have a role to play, by educating people that religion is about perception, but there can only be one truth on the issue.

He stressed that its all about education and awareness as they will continue to push hard. He said they will try collaborate with religious leaders to enlightened for the sake of humanity.

He mentioned that some of our laws on rape are outdated and need review, like many of our laws. He said some of the penalties need to be stiffer.
