Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed said on Wednesday that the first phase of the dam on the disputed Nile River has been completed.
The $ 4.6 billion Grand Ethiopia Renaissance Dam (GERD) will be the largest of its kind in Africa. To generate enough electricity by 2023, it is expected that the dam will generate 6,0000 megawatts of electricity.
“We have successfully completed the dam without harming anyone. At the moment, the dam is overflowing, ” Ahmed said in a statement.
The announcement comes a day after the presidents of Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan met at an online summit, agreeing to start talks on the dam.
