China takes control of US embassy in Chengdu

Published

on

The Chinese government says its officials took control of the US embassy in Chengdu on Monday, after it demanded its closure in retaliation for the US closure of its embassy in Houston.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced that the embassy was closed around 10 a.m. Monday, and Chinese officials later intervened to take control.

The United States has closed its embassy in Houston after accusing China of using the office as a spying spree, a move that has further strained relations between the world’s two largest economies.
