Ten people have been killed, five rescued and four others missing after a boat capsized in Lagos, Nigeria, authorities said on Saturday.

A statement from the Lagos State Water Authority said the boat was on its way to Badagry from Kirikiri Prison in the middle of the week when it suddenly burst into waves.

The statement said a total of 19 people were on board when the boat capsized, and it was unfortunate that most of the passengers on board were not wearing live jacket.

The anchor was arrested by the Maritime Authority and handed over to the Police for further investigation and prosecution.

Small boat accidents in Nigeria are not uncommon, most times they capsize as a result of overcrowding, and non-compliance with safety regulations.
