10.9% Residents In Kaduna Abuse Drugs – KADBUSA

The Kaduna State Bureau for Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment (KADBUSA) has expressed concern over the rate at which drug is abused in the state. The Bureau said that 10.9% of residents in the state are involved in drug abuse and other related substance.

The Director-General of KADBUSA Dr. Joseph Maigari made this know to newsmen in the state on the activities of the Bureau over the weekend.

According to Maigari, recent findings conducted across the 23 Local Government Areas of the state revealed that 11 out of 100 persons residing in the state abuse substance (s).

Maigari also claimed that Kaduna State is the only state that carried out a survey to ascertain the real problem of drug abuse in the state.

He also said the fight against drug abuse in Nigeria has always been of arresting suppliers and bringing them to book ” but as we’ve all seen, we can’t win the drug abuse battle with guns only.”

 The Best Drug Law

Maigari stated that for the fight against drug abuse to be won, “we have to win the minds and hearts of our people to eschew the use of drugs and substance abuse.”

He also added that the Kaduna State is the only state in the federation with the best drug law.

He said the Bureau of is working with some Non-Governmental Organisation (NGOs), government ministries and parastatals to reduce the rate of drug abuse in the state.

With the establishment of the four rehabilitation centers in four Local Government Areas of the state I.e. Kachia, Chikun, Ikara and Igabi LGAs plus the newly approved plan of handling mental issues of the residents by the Kaduna State mental health, it is believed that the state has taken a giant step toward curtailing the menace.
