Manchester City’s hopes of winning the Champions League this season have been shattered as they were surprisedly knocked out of the competition by Lyon.
City started the game as the strong favourite to qualify for the semifinal but they were unable to bring their ‘A’ game as they produced a poor performance against a fiercely determined Lyon in a game that was marred by controversy and blunders in the closing stages.
Lyon opened the scoring in the 24th minute with Maxwell Cormet’s brilliant finish but were back on level terms in the 69th minute after Kevin de bruyne scored from a Raheem Sterling assist.
However, former Celtic striker, Moussa Dembele, who came.on as a substitute, again put Lyon in front after a controversial circumstances 11 minute to stoppage time which led to the goal. The video assistant referee displayed what looked to be an obvious foul by the goal scorer but the referee on the pitch ignored it.
Man City pressed for an equaliser bit to no avail, as Man city’s Raheem Sterling missed an open chance in which he somehow hit the ball over the bar.
Matters were made worse when Lyon Dembele scored his second in the night after Edersn fumbled a shot from Hossem Aouar. Lyon will play Bayern Munich in the semifinals of the champions League.
