Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi has announced that the Chinese government will build the 50 million US dollar Daura Transportation University, which is scheduled to start in September next year, free of charge.
The minister, who made the announcement this weekend in Daura, Katsina State, during his maiden inspection of the current project, also announced that project consultants Technics Engineering Architectural Marketing, TEAM, have also promised to provide their services free of charge.
The Minister of Transportation further explained that the $50 million university will acquire the technology needed to operate the railroad system currently being built by the China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) when the Chinese withdraw.
Although this was not foreseen in the original plan, Amaechi has instructed the contractors to include a primary and a secondary school in the master plan to meet the schooling needs of the children of the families who will work there.
According to him, “construction will begin in September. What they are doing now is cleaning up. They have promised to build a primary and a secondary school at the university. This university is a donation of the Chinese government through the China Engineering Construction Corporation, CECC. The Technique, Engineering, and Marketing (TEAM) has also agreed to do the consulting work,” he said.
Amaechi had previously made a courtesy visit to the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Farooq Umar, shortly after inspecting the project site. He said that the university was not part of the railroad contract, but had been made available to the FG free of charge by the Chinese government.
“Let me also thank the CCECC for agreeing to build the university for free. It is not part of the railroad contract, we spoke to the CCECC and asked them to train Nigerians to adopt it in their technology and they agreed. All Nigerians from all parts of the country are entitled to come here to study, as well as to teach. Those who will teach will not only come from Daura but from all parts of the country.
“So we agreed with CCECC to build the university and we chose Daura. We believe that hopefully the school will be finished next year and then we can start studying,” he said.
Later, the minister paid a courtesy visit to the Governor of Katsina State, Aminu Bello Masari, who promised to do everything possible to ensure the cooperation of the host community.
It should be remembered that the groundbreaking ceremony for the project was held by President Muhammadu on December 2, 2019.
Among the personalities on the inspection tour were the Chairman of the Board, Nigeria Railway Corporation, NRC, Ibrahim Alhassan, and other senior government officials.
