In Portland Oregon, one person was shot dead on Saturday as a large caravan of U.S President Donald Trump supporters clash with protesters of Black Lives Matter in the streets.
However, it is not clear if the shooting was linked to fights that broke out involving 600 Donald Trump supporters and protesters if black lives matter.
An Associated Press freelancer observed police medics working on the body of the victim, who appeared to be a white man.
Meanwhile, the Portland Police Bureau said, “Portland Police officers heard sounds of gunfire from the area of Southeast 3rd Avenue and Southwest Alder Street. They responded and located a victim with a gunshot wound to the chest. Medical responded and determined that the victim was deceased.”
In recent times, Portland has been the area were nightly protest continue to occur for three consecutive months now after the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Since the beginning of the protest, hundreds of people have been apprehended by police.
The chaotic scenes at Portland came two days after President Trump invoked Portland as a city overrun with violence in a speech at the Republican National Convention as part of his law and order reelection campaign theme. This is the third Saturday that Trump supporters have rallied in the city.
Earlier in the day at a nearby mal, Trump supporters drove its members in the caravan to the heart of Portland, but as they arrive in the city of Portland, they were stopped by protesters who were standing in the streets and blocking the bridges.
Videos from the scene showed intense fighting, as Trump supporters shoot paint ball pellets at opponents and making use if a bear spray as Black Lives Matter supporters threw things at the caravan.
Portland Police stated in a tweet that, “There have been some instances of violence between demonstrators and counter demonstrators, officers have intervened and in some cases made arrests.”
It was said that the Black Lives Matter demonstrations mainly target police buildings and federal buildings. Some protesters have called for police budget cuts while the city’s mayor and the African American community have complained about the violence, saying it’s counterproductive.
In the early hours of Saturday, fires was set outside of a police union building which is said to be the site of protesters and also made the police to declare a riot.
Police said in a statement that an accelerant was used to light up a mattress and other debris that was laid against the door and one dumpster had also been set on fire in the street nearby.
The commotion followed a sit-in in the lobby of the Portland mayor’s condominium building Friday night.
