An official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was shot and seriously injured.
The incident took place on Saturday, when voters participated in the state governorship elections, and was confirmed by Professor Godswill Alan Lukman, the Collation Officer in Etsako Central LGA where the incident happened.
Professor Godswill made this known to newsmen on Sunday at the Benin City collation center, while also reporting on the situation of elections in the LGA.
However, he explained that the victim was not dead, but was in critical condition in a state hospital.
The fundraising center official, who determined that the incident was due to the violence at the polling station, added that another ad hoc official had been cut in the face.
He explained that some hooligans suspected of political thugs stormed the site and interrupted the exercise, causing the voters who came to the polls to run for safety.
As a result, the elections in the electoral district could not be completed.
The professor gave an update on the election result in the LGA, saying that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) got 7,478 votes while the All Progressive Congress (APC) got 8,359.
As it stands after results from 17 LGAs
Ize-Iyamu – APC – 212,983
Obaseki – PDP – 295,296
