There was an explosion at River State old Flour Mill Company Limited which is located at Industry and Harbour Road in Port Harcourt City Local Government Area of River State.
The explosion which took place on Friday shook both residential areas and business premises within and afar, which caused panic to residents, as some people ran out of their houses to find out what had happened.
The cause of the explosion at the flour mill, which has not been operating for more than a year, could not be determined, but witnesses described the noise generated as “very loud” and said a large fire soon erupted.
One witness said the plant was not operating, but some people were loading an unspecified number of products as they left the plant while firefighters responded to emergency calls.
“I left the flour mills about ten minutes when I heard the explosion. I don’t know what caused it because we came back to the place but could not get in because it was dangerous,” he said.
The plant facility is surrounded by the Nigerian Ports Authority, Ports and Terminal Operators Limited and the Nigerian Customs Service, among others.
Also, officials of the Nigerian Ports Authority and Rivers State Fire Brigade, who responded to the distress call, said that although no lives were lost, they struggled to extinguish the fire, which lasted about two hours.
Meanwhile, the Rivers State Commissioner for Special Operations, Mr. Thomas Barriere, confirmed the incident and said there were no casualties.
He said, “Our men were on the scene, we reacted quickly and got to the fire in time to extinguish it, so we have no reason to be concerned.”
