At least thirty people escaped for their lives after the collapse of a storey building in the suburb of Yanshanu, Jos, Plateau State.
The building, which housed eight households, collapsed after heavy rains on Friday.
One resident, Adamu Mubiro, explained to our reporter in Jos on Saturday that the residents were lucky when the building collapsed a few minutes after the evacuation.
Mubiro said, “When the rain started, we heard some sound from the building with four flats and some people came to warn the occupants to vacate the place.
“Less than ten minutes after they moved out of the building, it collapsed around 9am.”
However, Jos Metropolitan Development Board Director-General Kefas Yirlwang, who also confirmed the collapse of the building, said there was no loss of life.
Yirlwang noted, “It was an old building that collapsed during a heavy downpour. As soon as we learned of the incident, our men were immediately deployed to the area and fortunately there were no casualties as the residents were taken away unharmed. ”
The general manager advised residents to stay away from the dilapidated houses to prevent incidents such as the building collapse, especially during the rainy season.
