A report released by Dataphyte says that one-third of married women in Nigeria face abuse by their husbands.
The report said that even if the women were pregnant this did not prevent their husbands from abusing them, and the majority of victims were between the ages of 15 and 24, mostly in the northeast.
Statistics show that the number of abused women increased from 4.3 per cent in 2013 to 10.3 per cent in 2018.
According to the report, two-thirds of Nigerian women have no say in marriage.
Dataphyte also said it had identified 17 million women in Nigeria between the ages of 15 and 49 who had been sexually abused.
“While there are 8 million who say they have been abused in the last 12 months before the survey, 4 percent of these women say they were sexually abused before the age of 18,” the report said.
According to the report, 16 percent of women in northeastern Nigeria have been sexually abused during their lifetime.
