Tech Company, Apple has finally unveiled its new iPhone 12 series with 5G connectivity which happens to be the first in the United States.
According to analysts, the iPhone 12 have a 5G, or fifth-generation wireless technology, which theoretically works 10-20 times faster than today’s 4G wireless networks.
However, using the next iPhone or any 5G device on today’s network will be “like Ferrari, ” but if you use it in your community and cannot drive at up to 200 miles per hour just because the roads cannot withstand that speed,” explained Boris Metodiyev, assistant director of the research firm Strategy Analytics.
Apple, which presented the new phone at a virtual event on Tuesday, will have to follow a tough line between seducing consumers to upgrade their phones without making many promises about what 5G can do today.
Today’s 5G networks in the United States mainly use the low-frequency wireless spectrum, or airspace, which is slower than the high-frequency spectrum but more reliable over longer distances. It is likely to take years before major phone operators promise that massive speed increases will make reality and real-time play in the clouds continuous.
Several American operators have deployed networks based on low frequency bands with speeds just above 4G. A noticeably faster version of the medium group 5G is also being launched, but it is unlikely to reach three-quarters of Americans by 2025, according to Apple analyst Gene Munster from the venture capital firm Loup Ventures.
The highest speeds that carriers touch are the 5G type, called a ‘millimetre wave’, or mm wave that operates at shorter distances. Verizon Communications Inc. has the largest mmWave network available today, which is available only in limited spaces.
While Verizon 5G users were able to connect almost 10 times faster than Sprint and T-Mobile, actual average speeds were much lower, according to a June report from OpenSignal, a mobile signal research company.
On average, AT&T Inc. and Verizon customers using 5G mobile phones saw only a slight increase in 4G speeds, according to the same study.
In South Korea and China, faster 5G networks are more widespread. But Apple will compete with local brands, including Samsung in South Korea, which is already on the second line of 5G phones, and China’s Huawei Technologies Co Ltd, whose sales increased after the American telecommunications giant was banned.
Another big disappointment is that applications that use higher speeds to provide something new have not yet been created. This is a chicken and egg problem in this part of the technology cycle, managers said, noting that interest in 4G has been reinforced by mobile applications from Facebook Inc. and Alphabet Inc. on YouTube.
“Applications that will illuminate us and really take advantage of the network will only be developed when the network and devices are available,” said Morgan Kurk, CTO of CommScope, a manufacturer of telecommunications equipment.
American consumers who are most motivated to buy a 5G phone are those who need a new smartphone right now and want to protect their investment.
“If you buy a phone that you have for three years, you will want to make sure it is compatible with the latest networks,” said Geoff Blaber, Vice President of Research at CCS Insight.
You just have to know what to expect, added Blaber. “There’s relatively little you can do on the iPhone 5G that you can’t do on the iPhone 4G today.”
