Dare-devil gunmen continued their assault in Nigeria’s South-East area on Sunday, assaulting a Nigerian Army checkpoint and torching operational vehicles.
According to eyewitnesses, gunmen raided the Ukworji Checkpoint on the Owerri-Onitsha Road in Imo State, raining bullets on staff and forcing them to flee.

It’s unclear if any army personnel were killed in the shooting.

“Soldiers in Ukworji checkpoint, along Owerri Onitsha lane, narrowly escaped death as they fled upon seeing unknown gunmen who invaded the checkpoint and set all the operational vans on fire,” a witness, Chioma Kanu, wrote on Twitter.

Last week, security operatives in Enugu State came face to face with gunmen who appeared to be becoming bolder in their attacks on uniformed personnel.

In Nsukka, Enugu State, troops of the Nigerian Army have been fighting gunmen who some residents have referred to as agents of the Eastern Security Network.
