Unbundle power, labour, works, other ministries – Sam Amadi to Tinubu

A former Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, Dr Sam Amadi, has pointed out some ministries the incoming Bola Tinubu’s administration should consider unbundling.

DAILY POST reports that the outgoing Buhari administration adjusted some federal ministries upon assumption of office in 2019. The ministries are Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development; Police Affairs, Special Duties and International Affairs, Aviation and Power, Ministry of Information and Culture.

During the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, the Aviation ministry was part of the Transportation ministry; the power ministry was initially part of the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing.

Amadi said the Ministry of Works and Housing should be unbundled, while the Ministry of Energy should be created, which should consist of Power and Petroleum.

Amadi told DAILY POST that Tinubu’s administration should consider creating the Ministry of National Reconciliation and Integration, which should focus on social justice and national integration.

According to the social analyst: “The Ministry of Housing and Works should be unbundled because housing is a critical missing piece of human capital development in Nigeria.

“Power and Petroleum Ministry should be redesigned. I think everything that has to do with gas, and gas transport should go back to power. Power should include gas transportation; you know, Yar’adua brought it up because of our dependence on hydro-carbon.

“I think they should consider an energy ministry that consists of power and petroleum; we still need a high level of coherence in gas-to-power to optimize the use of gas.

“I don’t think we need the Ministry of Sports and Youth Development; sports should be run at the level of commissions and associations.

“We should have a Ministry of Youths and Innovation so that they will focus on youths from the perspective of development and not the educational point of view, so we now have a Ministry of Youths and Human Development.

“The Ministry of Women Affairs should be framed in a way that it targets specific issues like girl-child education which should relate to gender affairs.

“We need a Ministry of National Reconciliation and Integration which should focus more on social justice, national integration, and inclusion.

“Labour and productivity- there should be a Ministry of Employment and Entrepreneurship which will focus on production of the new areas we need to grow the economy rather than the old cultural ways of ministry doing transactions. Ministries should be defined to be innovative so that by name you know that they are designed for something. From the name, you know they would develop skills and competency.

“I don’t think we need the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, it should be the Ministry of Social and Human Development. It can’t be disaster management because we have FERMA. Some of these guys should work independently as commissions and agencies, so disasters should be under the environment. Ministry of Environment should cover disasters and emergencies.”
