Former Commissioner, Local Government Affairs, Sarkin Daji emerges Speaker Niger Assembly

Former Niger State Commissioner for Local Government, Community Development and Chieftaincy Affairs, Abdulmalik Sarkin Daji, who represents Mariga Constituency, has emerged the Speaker of the state House of Assembly.

Sarkin-Daji who was also a two-time Chairman of Mariga LG in the state became the leader of the house following his nomination by Mohammed Haruna representing Bida 11 and was seconded by Abdulrahaman Gambo of Borgu constituency.

Similarly, the only female in the house, Afiniki Dauda, representing the Gurara constituency was elected as the Deputy Speaker.

The oath of office was administered by the clerk of the house, Abdullahi Kagara while the new speaker later swore other 25 members of the House in.

Recall that two out of the 27-member assembly were reelected into the House including Idris Vatsa of Lapai and Mohammed Haruna of Bida II constituencies, after the March 18 election.

In his acceptance speech, the speaker told the clerk of the house to inform both the executive and the judiciary arms that the house is fully constituted and ready for legislative duties.

Sarkin-Daji also assured that the house will alongside the executive arm of the government ensure the transformation of the state in all spheres of development while promising his colleagues of providing servant leadership.

Deputy Governor, Yakubu Garba who witnessed the swearing-in, in his goodwill message, said the executive is set to work with the legislative arm of the government to take the state to the next level.

He said, ” let me remind you(lawmakers) that the expectations from the people are high and therefore, a lot is expected from you in terms of quality legislation that will enhance good governance in Niger State”.
