Baffled by the incessant attacks on communities by landgrabbers, the Ogun State House of Assembly has taken steps to put an end to the menace.
The State House of Assembly said it is set to amend the State Anti-Land Grabbing Law of 2016.
To actualise this, the lawmakers said they would conduct a stakeholders’ forum on the review of the law titled, “The Prohibition of Forcible Occupation of Landed Properties Law 2016.”
The review would enable the Assembly to address “the rampant cases of land grabbing” being recorded recently in the state.
Speaker Olakunle Oluomo made this known on Thursday in his response to petitions by some lawmakers during a plenary session held at the Assembly Complex in Abeokuta.
In strong terms, the Speaker condemned the “life-threatening and violent conduct of landgrabbers” in the state in recent times.
He noted that the amendment became necessary to re-consider the diverse opinions of relevant stakeholders in the concerned sector so as to give a more effective implementation framework to the law.
Oluomo commended the Surveyor General of Ogun State for setting up a taskforce towards the enforcement of the Anti-Land Grabbing Law, adding that the Ogun 10th Assembly remains committed to collaborating with government ministries, departments, and agencies, as well as relevant professional bodies, in carrying out an immediate amendment of the law.
